IELTS score for Australia PR: what each band is worth in points
Australia PR needs IELTS 6 in each skill. 7 in each adds 10 points and 8 in each adds 20. The levels, PTE scores, partner points and validity rules.
The minimum IELTS score for Australia PR on the points-tested skilled visas (subclasses 189, 190 and 491) is 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Department of Home Affairs calls this Competent English. It makes you eligible but earns no points. 7.0 in each skill is Proficient English and earns 10 points. 8.0 in each skill is Superior English and earns 20 points, the maximum for English.
The word that catches people is 'each'. Australia does not use your overall band. Your level is set by your lowest skill, so 8.5 overall with a 7.5 in Writing counts as Proficient, not Superior. Below: the full score table with PTE equivalents, what English is worth against the 65-point pass mark, your partner's score, which tests are refused and how long a result stays valid.
IELTS scores for Australia PR at a glance
- The IELTS thresholds did not change on 7 August 2025. The PTE thresholds did, because PTE changed its scoring. Older PTE results follow a different table, covered below.
- A score between levels earns only the lower level. 7.5 in every skill is still Proficient English and 10 points.
- Citizens of the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada and New Zealand who hold a valid passport from that country meet Competent English without a test. Proficient and Superior English can only be shown with a test score, so they still need a test to claim 10 or 20 points.
| English level | IELTS (each of the 4 skills) | PTE Academic (L / R / W / S) | Points for skilled visas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competent English | 6.0 | 47 / 48 / 51 / 54 | 0, but required to be eligible |
| Proficient English | 7.0 | 58 / 59 / 69 / 76 | 10 |
| Superior English | 8.0 | 69 / 70 / 85 / 88 | 20 |
Why 'in each skill' matters more than your overall band
Every Australian English level is defined per component: 'in each of the 4 test components, at least' a set score. Your overall band never appears in the rule. One weak skill therefore decides your points.
- Find your lowest skill and plan around it. Improving your best skill earns nothing.
- Home Affairs accepts IELTS results that include a One Skill Retake for eligible visas. If one skill is holding you back, a One Skill Retake may be faster and cheaper than a full re-sit. Check your visa's own page first.
| L | R | W | S | Overall | Level | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 | 8.5 | 7.5 | 8.0 | 8.0 | Proficient | 10 |
| 7.0 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0 | Competent | 0 |
| 8.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 | Superior | 20 |
| 9.0 | 8.5 | 5.5 | 7.5 | 7.5 | Below Competent | Not eligible |
How many points English is worth on the 189, 190 and 491
All three points-tested visas use the same English points. To be invited you need at least 65 points, competent English, a suitable skills assessment and an age under 45. The visas differ in what else they add.
| Visa | Competent / Proficient / Superior English | Nomination or sponsorship points |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Independent (subclass 189) | 0 / 10 / 20 | None. No nomination |
| Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) | 0 / 10 / 20 | 5, for state or territory nomination |
| Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) | 0 / 10 / 20 | 15, for state or territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship |
Why 65 is not your real target
65 points is the pass mark, but it does not get you invited. SkillSelect ranks expressions of interest and invites from the top, so in practice each occupation's cut-off sits above the pass mark. It varies by occupation and by round. Check the latest invitation round on the SkillSelect site rather than trusting a number from an article, this one included.
That is why English is the lever people pull first. Age points change only as the years pass, and work experience takes years to build. English points can move by 20 in a few months of focused preparation. For a 28-year-old, age is already worth 30 points (the band for at least 25 but under 33). Moving from 6 to 7 in each skill adds 10 more, and moving from 7 to 8 adds another 10.
- Superior English (20 points) is worth more than state nomination on a 190 (5 points), and more than the 491's nomination or sponsorship points (15 points).
- If your points sit just under recent cut-offs, Superior English is usually the only claim you can add before your next birthday changes your age points.
Your partner's IELTS score
Partner skills is a separate points line, and your partner's English is part of it. Your partner must be on the same visa application. They must also not be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and their English is assessed as at the time of invitation.
- The spouse IELTS score for Australia PR is therefore 6.0 in each skill. A higher score earns your partner no extra points.
- If your marital status changes during processing, Home Affairs says it may not award these points.
| Situation | Points |
|---|---|
| Partner is under 45, has competent English (IELTS 6 in each skill), a skilled occupation on the same list and a suitable skills assessment | 10 |
| Partner has competent English only | 5 |
| You are single, or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident | 10 |
| Partner applies with you but none of the above | 0 |
IELTS General Training or Academic for Australia PR?
Either. Home Affairs lists IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training separately, with identical thresholds at every level, and accepts One Skill Retake on both. Choose the version you score higher on. If you also need a university place in Australia, take Academic, because universities generally ask for it.
Computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS are both accepted, as long as you sit the test at a secure test centre.
Tests Australia will not accept
Home Affairs does not accept any English test taken entirely online, also called remote-proctored or at-home testing. IELTS Online is on that list, whatever its result shows. So are TOEFL iBT Home Edition, CELPIP Online, LanguageCert Academic Online, OET@Home and MET Digital taken at home.
TOEFL iBT has one extra condition. You must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, or the result may not be accepted.
How long your IELTS score is valid for Australia PR
For the skilled visas the test must be taken in the 3 years before your application. Points are assessed at the time you are invited, so the result also has to be inside that window on the invitation date. A score that expires while your EOI waits in the pool cannot support the claim.
Results from tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 can still be used until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa, and they are judged against the older table.
| English level | IELTS (each skill) | PTE Academic, old scoring (each skill) |
|---|---|---|
| Competent | 6.0 | 50 |
| Proficient | 7.0 | 65 |
| Superior | 8.0 | 79 |
IELTS vs PTE for Australia PR
Both are accepted at every level, along with TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic and the Michigan English Test. IELTS uses one number per skill at each level. Since 7 August 2025, PTE uses a different number for each skill, with the highest bars in Writing and Speaking: 85 and 88 for Superior.
Neither test is easier for everyone. Take the one whose format suits your weakest skill. A candidate whose Speaking falls apart under a live examiner may do better with a computer microphone, and the reverse is just as common. A practice test in each, scored honestly, settles it better than any comparison table.
Nurses, doctors and teachers: registration is a separate test
The scores above are what Home Affairs needs for the visa. Many professions also need registration or a skills assessment, and that body sets its own English requirement, often a different score and sometimes a different test. Nurses, for example, register with their national board, separately from the visa. Check your assessing authority's rule before booking, and plan to sit one test that clears both bars.
How to get from 7 to 8 in each skill
- Take a full timed practice test and record the four bands separately. Your lowest skill is your whole plan.
- Writing is where most 8.0 attempts fail. Band 8 needs a well-developed response that covers every part of the task, with only occasional errors, so get every practice essay scored against the four criteria.
- In Speaking, Band 8 allows hesitation while you think about content, but rarely while you search for language. Record yourself and count the times you stop to find a word.
- In Reading and Listening, 8.0 means very few lost marks. Check the raw-score chart and drill the question types where you drop them.
