How to get Band 6.5 in IELTS
Band 6.5 is a 'competent' user: generally effective command of English with some inaccuracies. On the CEFR scale that is B2. It is the common minimum for many undergraduate courses and some visa categories.

Reading
Around 27-29 correct (Academic): reliable on True/False/Not Given and completion.
- Master True/False/Not Given: it's often a third of the paper.
- Don't over-run one passage; flag and move on.
Writing
A clear response to the task with an overview (Task 1) and a position (Task 2), organised paragraphs, and errors that don't impede meaning.
- Always include a Task 1 overview and a clear Task 2 position.
- One idea per paragraph with a topic sentence.
Speaking
Extended answers with a mix of tenses; some hesitation and errors are fine if meaning is clear.
- Never give one-word answers: add a reason and example.
- Keep talking through Part 2's full two minutes.

How long it takes to reach Band 6.5
Timelines assume focused, diagnosed practice rather than hours logged. The single biggest predictor of speed is whether you drill your weakest question types or simply repeat full mock tests without analysing them.

12-16 weeks
Accuracy before ambition. At 5.0 the ceiling is almost never vocabulary; it is grammar you can recognise but cannot yet produce reliably under time, plus Listening and Reading marks given away to spelling and word-limit slips. Fix those two and 6.0 arrives faster than most people expect.

8-12 weeks
Structure. A 5.5 Writing script usually has ideas but no controlled shape: no Task 1 overview, or a Task 2 position that shifts between paragraphs. Learning one reliable structure per task type is worth more here than any amount of new vocabulary.

4-6 weeks
One skill, not four. At 6.0 the average is usually held down by a single skill sitting at 5.5. Find it with a diagnostic, drill only that, and let the rounding do the rest - moving one skill from 5.5 to 7.0 lifts the overall average by nearly 0.4.
Is Band 6.5 enough for what you need?
Requirements are almost always stated per skill, not as an overall average. This is where most candidates misjudge their own score: an overall band that clears the bar with one skill below the per-skill minimum is refused.
Undergraduate and taught postgraduate study
Meets it6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is the single most common entry requirement across UK and Australian universities. Check the per-skill minimum as well as the overall - a 7.0 average with 5.5 in Writing is refused where a flat 6.5 is accepted.
UK Skilled Worker visa
Meets itClears it comfortably. From 8 January 2026 the requirement rose from B1 to B2 for first-time Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual applicants - that is IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in every skill, and the benchmark is per skill, not an overall average.
Canada Express Entry (CLB 8)
Depends on the skill splitNot quite. On General Training, CLB 8 needs Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5. A flat 6.5 leaves you at CLB 7 because Listening is the strictest skill in the mapping. CLB 7 (6.0 in every skill) is the usual minimum to enter the pool.
Australia skilled migration
Depends on the skill splitAbove the Competent English floor of 6.0 in each skill, but worth zero points. Proficient English needs 7.0 in every skill for 10 points, and Superior English needs 8.0 in every skill for 20.
What the on-screen test changes at Band 6.5
Computer-delivered Listening gives you roughly two minutes to check answers at the end, not the ten-minute transfer window paper allowed. At 6.5 that removes the safety net most candidates at this level were relying on to fix spelling. Type the answer correctly the first time, and practise the completion tasks on screen rather than on paper.
What changed in IELTS in 2026Using One Skill Retake to reach Band 6.5
One Skill Retake is at its most valuable at this level, because a single weak skill is usually what is holding the average down. Sit the full test, find the skill sitting a band below the others, drill it for four to six weeks, then re-sit only that skill within 60 days. It only applies to computer-delivered IELTS, must be taken in the same country as the original test, and can be used once per full test.

Is Band 6.5 good enough for a UK university?

For most taught undergraduate and master's courses, yes: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is the standard requirement. Competitive courses, and law, medicine, journalism and teaching in particular, often ask for 7.0 or higher with per-skill minimums.
How long does it take to go from 5.5 to 6.5 in IELTS?

Eight to twelve weeks of consistent, targeted practice is realistic for most candidates. The variable is not study hours but whether the practice is diagnosed - people who drill their weakest question types move roughly twice as fast as people who take full mock tests repeatedly without analysing them.
Can I get 6.5 overall with a 6.0 in Writing?

Yes, arithmetically: 7, 7, 6, 6.5 averages to 6.625, which rounds up to 6.5. Whether it is accepted is a separate question - many universities and every visa category that specifies per-skill minimums will reject it regardless of the overall. Always read the per-skill requirement before deciding a band is enough.
